Parenting Style and Flexibility in Coping with Stress among Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation
Abstract
Different parenting styles (e.g. authoritative, authoritarian, or permissive) are significantly associated with young people’s ability to flexibly cope with stressful situations. Emotion regulation also plays an important role in this process, as it involves the ability to recognize, understand, and appropriately modify one’s own emotions in the context of coping with stress. The aim of the present study was to determine the mediating role of emotion regulation in the relationship between parenting styles and coping flexibility among adolescents. The study included 204 participants aged 13–17 years (M = 15.72; SD = 0.79). The following instruments were used: the Parenting Styles Analysis Questionnaire, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire – Positive/Negative Emotions (ERQ–PN), and the Adolescent Coping Flexibility Questionnaire. The results demonstrated that emotion regulation mediates the relationship between parenting style and coping flexibility; yet, the nature of this mediation is complex and occurs for the cognitive reappraisal of negative emotions across all maternal and paternal styles, as well as for the cognitive reappraisal of positive emotions in the authoritarian and loving-liberal maternal styles. These findings highlight the mediating links between parenting styles, emotional self-regulation abilities, and coping strategies among adolescents.
